Handyman in Benton City, WA

Benton City sits on the north bank of a bend in the Yakima River, about twenty-two miles west of Kennewick along I-82, with the small community of Kiona just across the river to the south. It's a small town of about thirty-five hundred people, platted by a railroad in 1909 and incorporated in 1945, and it grew as irrigation water from the Sunnyside Canal reached the area in the late 1940s. Today it's best known as the gateway to Red Mountain, the small, sun-baked wine region that rises just east of town and is lined with vineyards and tasting rooms. The housing here is mostly modest and practical. Around the old town center you'll find small homes and cottages from the early and middle parts of the last century, along with postwar ranches. Out on the edges and up the slopes are manufactured homes on larger lots, newer ranch homes and a few custom houses with views over the river and the vineyards. Plenty of properties carry horse fencing, detached garages and shops, and families who have been in Benton City for generations live alongside newer arrivals drawn by the lower cost of land and the small-town pace.

Life in Benton City runs along a short main street and out to the river and the vineyards. The historic Benton City–Kiona bridge crosses the Yakima between the two communities, I-82 runs along the south side of the river with the town's exit just off it, and state routes head out toward West Richland past Red Mountain and north toward the Hanford area. The Yakima itself is part of daily life, with people fishing and floating it in warm weather, and the Kiona-Benton schools are a center of town. Red Mountain's wineries bring weekend traffic and visitors, but most of the town is quiet residential streets and properties with a few animals. The climate here is as dry and windy as anywhere in the Tri-Cities, and the vineyards on the mountain are proof of how hot and sunny the summers get. Winters bring cold nights and freezing fog along the river. Homes face the same sun-baked trim, dust-packed weatherstripping, wind-loosened fences and hard water that the rest of the region sees, often with fewer contractors willing to make the drive.

What Benton City neighbors book most

Benton City is at the western end of our range, a straight run out I-82, and we plan those trips so a full list gets done in one visit.

Jobs we handle a lot around Benton City

Benton City lists are a mix of house and property work. We repair and rebuild wood and vinyl fences, re-hang and brace gates, fix exterior doors and screen doors worn by wind and sun, and replace faucets, toilets and supply lines worn by hard water. Light fixtures and ceiling fans are popular upgrades in older homes, and we patch drywall and touch up paint where years of settling have left cracks. Outdoors, it's pressure washing driveways and patios, clearing gutters packed with dust and leaves, and getting houses and shops ready for winter so hose bibs and exposed pipes make it through the cold snaps. Manufactured homes on acreage add skirting repairs, step and railing fixes and door adjustments.

Questions we hear in Benton City

Do you really come out to Benton City?

Yes. It's within our service area, about a half-hour drive from Kennewick on I-82. Because of the distance we like to group Benton City and Kiona jobs on the same day, and it helps if you send your whole list at once so we can handle everything in a single trip.

My older Benton City home has doors that won't close right. What's causing it?

In older homes here, the usual causes are settling over the decades, wood that has dried and shrunk in the heat, and hinges that have worn loose. Big swings between summer heat and winter cold make it worse, so a door that's fine in March may bind in August. We tighten and shim hinges, plane or adjust the door where needed, reset strikes and replace worn weatherstripping so the door closes cleanly and seals against dust and drafts.

Do you work in Kiona too?

Yes. Kiona sits right across the river from Benton City, and we cover it on the same trips. If you're on a property out toward the I-82 interchange or along the river roads, let us know your address and we'll confirm.

Can you help winterize a house and shop before the cold sets in?

Yes. Out here a winterizing visit usually means disconnecting and insulating hose bibs, checking that exposed pipes in shops and crawlspaces are protected, replacing worn door sweeps and weatherstripping, cleaning gutters and making sure gates and doors latch securely before the winter winds. Doing it in October saves a lot of trouble in January.
